Aran MÁRE is a non-profit organisation based on Inis Mór, the largest of the Aran Islands. We provide science-based education, facilitate marine research, and promote conservation of Ireland’s Atlantic ecosystems.
Our programmes bring together local communities, schools, universities, and youth to build a deeper connection with the ocean.
At the moment, Aran MÁRE is focusing on a select group of key marine themes — seaweeds and kelp forests, grey seals, and nudibranch biodiversity. We have chosen these areas because they are part of what we observe and experience every day during scuba dives, snorkelling, and life on the Aran Islands.
They provide a natural starting point for education, youth engagement, and meaningful research.
As the organisation develops, our focus may expand or adapt in response to new scientific findings, community needs, and environmental priorities.
Essential ecosystems preserve biodiversity while sequestering carbon for environmental health.
Iconic Atlantic mammals symbolize ecosystem vitality and are essential for monitoring marine health.
Colourful sea slugs that showcase the hidden beauty and fragility of marine life.
A pathway for young people to discover the ocean, gain skills, and take part in marine research.
The Aran Islands are uniquely located where Atlantic currents meet, creating a thriving marine ecosystem of global importance. From kelp forests to dolphins, from limestone seabeds to seal colonies, the islands are a living classroom for understanding biodiversity, climate change, and cultural heritage.
